Found a snake, help me identify it.

Found a small snake in my yard today, sorry no pics.

About 6-8 inches long, BLACK DOCILE SNAKE, has a bright yellow band right behind the head. I did not kill it, I put it in my rock garden where there is plenty of bugs, and small critters from him/her to feed on. Plus the decomposing mulch in there will keep hi/her warm this winter.

I know most snakes in my area are non poisonous, so I just relocated it off my front steps so my wife would not freak out.

Hmmm...I just looked up the Ringneck snake and it doesn't appear to be a native snake to GA. You sure it was a black rat snake? They are very common here and I've found quite a few in my back yard.

The ringed neck snake is native from Nova Scotia to Ontario and south to Mexico. That should be with in range enough.

A sure way to tell is to let it bite you then call 911. When you're rushed to the hospital, just describe the snake to the doctor. He'll be able to tell you what kind it is and he'll even go so far as to tell you whether its poisonous or not.
