Found a screw that the previous owner lost in my boxer 6 engine

I was driving to work when all of a sudden the engine lost power. As I was trying to find a safe place to pull over, the power came back but there was a loud clanking noise. I shut the engine off and called AAA. I got the car into the garage, and waited until the weekend to diagnose the problem.

I did a compression check and found the #1 cylinder had only 80lbs, the rest were within spec., so I started disassembly. As I was removing the head, a screw fell out of the combustion chamber. Here are the results:

The culprit:

The combustion chamber in the head:

The piston:

At this point I knew the head/piston/piston rod would have to be rebuilt/replaced. So I disassembled the engine as much as I could without removing it from the car, and cleaned all the grease and oil. Here is a photo of the partial disassembly:

I had Steve Goodman at Rear Engine Specialists completely rebuild a head with new valve guides, valve seats, new valves, new valve springs, and a 3 angle valve job. He also deflashed the head and did a great job of cleaning everything up. Here are some photos:

He also rebult a different piston/piston rod/cylinder since the other piston was too far gone:

Steve Goodman sent me all the parts/gaskets/seals/etc. to complete the job. Everything including shipping from Colorado to Texas was just over $300.

More to come as the cleaning and assembly continues.

Haha! It's not funny, as it sucks to have a random screw get into the intake and eventually make it into the chamber, but the marks just shout <SLAM!><SLAM!><SLAM!><SLAM!><SLAM!><SLAM!><BOOM!>, and that made me chuckle a little. Sorry.

pretty cool how you can see the imprint of the threads on the piston.

Post some pictures of your car. How much time did it take you to take the head off? I am looking into getting a used Subaru and am wondering what is involved in their maintenance.

It took about 30 minutes to get the head off, simply from the fact that I had to remove all the engine air-cooling shrouds.

Here is what the engine should look like when cleaned up and re-assembled:

My Aunt had a light blue Corvair Monza. I have always loved Corvairs.

The Science Patrol drove them, too.

lol it will be completely different. This engine is air cooled. I don't think that subaru will be remotely similar

Nice corvair! If you're in/near san antonio you may know my father via the local corvair club. He absolutely loves his.

I've never seen a corvair engine before, but I wonder if there was any collaboration/ idea borrowing from Porsche/VW? Some of those parts look identical to their flat 4 and 6 counterparts.

I'm sure Chevrolet got some ideas from VW, but there was no colaboration. The Corvair with the boxer 6 were introduced at the Chevy dealerships on October 2nd, 1959. Porshe didn't have a boxer 6 until 1963 with the 911.

Ouch. Glad to hear it wasn't expensive overall. It sounds like the engine isn't too hard to work on either.

I wonder if this would fit. It's an air cooled boxer engine... :D

:Q I see 12 trumpets! WTF is it?! Two porka sixs joined at the hip?

The URL has a hint. :)

Haha, nice! My first remote control car I ever owned as a kid was a 917 replica.

While I do love the Corvair, I have to say that the 90 degree bend in the fan belt was a really bad idea.
