Do you folks this PSU should be able to handle 2 4870x2's??? It'll be going into my new rig which features a Q9450 overclocked to 3.2-3.6Ghz, 2x 2GB of ram, WD 640GB hard drive, 2 DVD burners and a Cooler Master 690 case. I'm guessing that my system would need about 800 watts max of total power consumption. Does that mean that there's 150 watts to spare on the PSU? The PSU has a high efficiency maximum of 84%.

Test Setup
Motherboard = ASUS P5E3 Deluxe ATX Intel Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 3.6Ghz (9x400)
Corsiar XMS DDR2 800 2x1GB
2XGeforce 9800GTX in SLI
2XWestern Digital Raptor WD740ADFD 74GB 10,000 RPM 16MB Cache Raid 0
Coolmax CUG950B 950 Watt Power Supply
Windows Vista with native DirectX 10

"Under the full load the system started consuming about on average of 420 Watts of power. And as you can see by the readings the PSU voltage rails hardly even fluctuated. The stability of the Coolmax PSU under standard real world environmental testing was outstanding."
+12V1 = 20A +12V2 = 20A +12V3 = 25A +12V4 = 25A

You will want a better PSU then that. A good quality 800W unit should be fine but CoolMax isn't what most consider to be a great qualtiy PSU. Look into getting a 1KW unit from Corsair, Pc P&C/OCZ, Cooler Master or some other high end brand.

As you can see here: http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3372&p=10 two HD4870X2's in crossfire peaked out at 752w in AT's testsystem, when only loading the GPU's, and not the CPU, ram, HDD's etc. They recommend a 1200w PSU for two HD4870X2's in crossfire. Perhaps 1000w will cut it, but I'd probably recommend this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16817171029

It's one of the cheaper 1200w models, if you want to try your luck with this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...50&bop=And&Order=PRICE by all means go ahead, but I wouldn't, not with such expensive hardware, not with a q6600 overclocked and what not ... If you want to try your luck with a 1000w PSU, try this one: http://www.buy.com/prod/antec-...loc/101/204697806.html at least it's a high qaulity PSU.

ATI has certified several 900W power supplies for use with dual HD4870X2s. Some of them are not so hot FSP units at that. I trust ATI to know what is required to run their cards more than anandtech.

Not to mention the fact that Derek and Anand have said some stuff about PSU requirements in their videocard reviews that were rather odd, and they expressed no desire to actually explore the problems farther. So I really don't trust anything an anandtech videocard review has to say about PSU requirements.

Could be so Hoofan, but I doubt ATI has run two HD4870X2's in crossfire on all those units for extended periods of time. But, like I said, you could try it on a 1000w PSU, the antec TPQ 1000w looks nike, for $195.

I have no doubt at all that a TPQ 1000W or a Corsair HX1000 or an OCZ EliteXstream or a Coolermaster RPP 1000W would be able to run these with no problem

this is what Oklahoma Wolf had to say about the Antec Signature 850W after he reviewed it.

Originally posted by: Oklahoma WolfThere are no video cards out right now I think it couldn't handle in SLI.

This was after someone asked him how the Antec would handle a couple of dual GPU cards, so I think when he said SLI, he just meant a dual graphics card setup.

If ATI is like nVidia, then when they certify a PSU, they make sure there is plenty of overhead. My main mistrust of anandtech's PSU requirement statements came after they said they needed to upgrade to a 1200W PSU just to run dual HD4850s. Hardware Secrets was running 3 GTX280s on a Corsair HX1000. Zap was running 3 GTX280s on a BFG ES-800.

To say that a couple of HD4850s require a 1200W PSU just seems ridiculous.
