Found a check for $800 in my old mail... check expired.

I thought this would never happen to me. I remember seeing a movie where character A burned an envelope given to him by character Bl. Character B said that it was a check for $70k for Character A. I think this was from the Naked Gun, but I could be mistaken.

Anyway, I vowed to myself to always read the mail after seeing that movie. I guess I slacked off. I just found an escrow check from my mortgage company for $800. Unfortunately, it expired in June. I moved, so it was mixed with all the other mail that I got forwarded to me.

Anyone know if I still have a case to get the check re-written to me? Not sure if refund from an escrow ever expires.

How do you forget that you were owed $800? Either way, if you haven't been paid, you're still owed that money.
I agree with this.

I don't understand how you can let the mail sit unread for 2 months, it's not like you receive heaps of it right?

Either way, the amount owed to you never expires. Companies cannot withhold money held by them owed to you. Currently, it's considered unclaimed property and is probably still held at the mortgage company. After a certain number of years, it will be payable to the state that they have listed as your last residence. That said, it is still your property, just held by the state.

Call them and tell them that the check has expired and you want a new one issued. You shouldn't have any issues.

The money should still be in your escrow account. Call your mortgage company instead of guessing.

The banks aren't obligated to cash a check over six months old. Many do, however. Deposit it and see what happens. If they reject it, they'll let you know pretty quickly.

call the mortgage company and ask them to reissue the check. they may request that you return the old check to them.

you could try to deposit it and see what happens, but in the past, I've been hit by bank fees for attempting to deposit an expired check.

Cheques expire? I had no idea. I don't know how I would miss a cheque of such large amount though, unless it was completely random and was not told I was getting it.

I was in the process of shredding some old mail. This happened to be in the pile. I forwarded my mail to my parents temporarily. They in turn then mailed me a stack of mail once a month. Since all of my bills are online, I didn't bother opening certain mail items (e.g., credit card statements, mortgage, car, etc.).

I'll deposit the check first. If it doesn't work, then I'll call my mortgage company.

Thanks!

I would just ask for a reissue instead of submitting the expired check. Sometimes the expiration coincides with the account reconciliation. Getting another reissue should not be a problem.

This is the correct answer.

I just got a check for 1800 that I forgot I was owed, an escrow reimbursement from refinancing

it happens, especially when you know things will take months to show up

I remember one month I got thousands of dollars from different places I didn't even know was coming. The title company sent a bunch of money, I got back a bunch of money from day trading fee's, and something else. It was like raining money that month

I once found $100 cash I put in a drawer a long time ago and forgot. That was a nice surprise

Yeah same.... I don't even know how that would work, is it a fixed amount of time, like 1 year after the date that's on it?

Though as a courtesy to the person giving you it, you should cash as soon as possible anyway, and if it's a big corporation you still want to cash it right away because you want your money. 😛
