No, seriously, kill it.
Why?!?! It's not hurting you. I'm sorry, but people who kill animals out of irrational fears are stupid.
Irrational? A black widow bite can kill you, and they often do.

So can old people in cars, fungus spores that float through the air, that tree in your front yard (hey, it COULD fall on you), etc, etc etc. I'd wager to bet that you'd be more likely to get struck by lightening than bitten by a black widow that lives near the ground of your back door. If it really bothers you, catch the bug in a cup and move it to a different location. No need to kill something that is really ridding you of REAL pests.

What are the differences between black widow and brown recluse spider bites/venom?

Which poisenous spiders live in Portland, OR?

The brown recluse is just nasty. It lives in Portland, Seattle... :)

The black widow bite is bad, but not that bad... :)
You may not always feel the black widow spider bite at first.

The first sign of a bite is a small local swelling.

There may be two small red spots in the center of the swelling.

After three hours or so, the site of the bite becomes more painful.

Common reactions include an overall ache of the body, in particular the legs.

Other symptoms include alternating salivation and dry-mouth, paralysis of the diaphragm, profuse sweating and swollen eyelids.

In severe cases, a headache, elevated blood pressure, nausea and perspiration could occur.

The poison injected by the the Black Widow bite can cause abdominal pain similar to appendicitis as well as pain to muscles or the soles of the feet.

In most cases symptoms disappear in two or three days.

Calcium gluconate is used intravenously to relieve and relax muscle spasms produced by black widow venom.

The victim of a black widow bite should go to the doctor immediately for treatment

I tried taking a picture of the Black widows belly but the damn thing is too busy wrapping the moth up in its web and eating it. It does have the red hour glass on its belly, I have a bad picture of it (had the flash on by accident) you can see the belly and a bit of the hour glass. Sorry for the lousy picture i'll try and get another one after its done feasting on that huge moth it caugh.

Dude, I warned you. Did you not believe me when I said the brown recluse (aka hobo) is nasty, or did I just pique your curiosity? ;)

if it is definitely a black widow, kill it. i'm not even joking. that's definitely dangerous to have around. since that spider looks relatively small, it's most likely the male. which means that the larger, more dangerous female could be around somewhere.

If it is the male, he's gonna be dead soon anyway. ;)

The brown recluse spider is not common in Ohio. It is found mainly in the southern and Midwestern states especially Arkansas, Oklahoma and Missouri.

i dont think the brown recluse spider is found in OR.
