Wondering why someone would throw this away. And yeah, dumpster diving is something a few of my friends and I do for entertainment occasionally. No gross dumpsters, just ones at computer/office stores mostly.

Stuff we've found in just a handful of outings:

Three of those nice long folding tables, great for LAN parties
52X CDRW drive mentioned above
Some cheap computer speakers
A ~$100 computer desk, with NO DAMAGE except for one 1" scratch on the surface. (I'm amazed at what Staples gets rid of)
Another computer desk, this one with a missing keyboard tray ...
And many, many odds and ends from thrift stores, which throw out boxes full of stuff daily because they have like a weekly limit and if it doesn't get sold, it's trashed. We have many stuffed animals to blow up for the 4th :D

The CDRW drive was at a local computer shop, I'm still trying to figure out why it was tossed. It reads fine, I've burned a few discs with it and they work fine...

There was also a 120GB HDD there, I knew it had to be dead but tried anyway. And yup, it was dead.

And like 100 copies of WinXP preinstall kits. But I have no use for those.

Dumpster diving is awesome.
I did a Kmart remodel once upon a time. A buddy and I went dumpster diving every morning religiously.
We scored rollerblades, badminton sets, fishing poles, radar detectors, tv's, most anything you can imagine.
They'd spray some stuff with purple paint to "destroy" it. Those were the instore returns that they got credit for without rma'ing. The stuff was never broke, the people returning it just said it was.
A little clear pvc primer would take the paint off.
Everybody made fun of us, but we loved it. :)

I found about 17 sets of industrial strength Elfa shelving, you know, the stainless steel wire shelves?

We kept about 6 sets and sold the rest. If you bought all the components, there was about $25,000+ in shelving.

Stupid people? Maybe it's not economically feasable to sell something like that. Maybe it was purchased for way more than what they can sell it for and they just choose to dump it instead of take the time to sell it for a few bucks.

Or maybe your guardian angel is watching over you ;)

We throw away a lot of good stuff at Gamestop, Controllers that "Don't work", cool posters, store standees, any thing in the store will at some point make it to the trash. I snagged a $100 HD system selector when some one returned it because some thing was rattling inside, opened it up and found a piece of plastic.

I should do some diving and the local Compusa!
