Forza 3 "Clean Lap" Problem

Either I don't understand the "clean lap" system in Forza, or this game has a huge irritating bug. Almost every race I do my laps get rejected as "unclean" (eg the little exclamation mark in the triangle) for absolutely no reason. I can be on a straight piece of track with my nearest opponent 100 metres away and suddenly the lap will be marked as unclean. Why does this happen?

There's a few different reasons.

1) You draft off an opponent.
2) You run offroad (any more than the edge of your tires).
3) You make contact with a wall or another car.

Try doing a lap on the Bugatti circuit at Le Mans - as far as I can tell it's impossible to get a clean lap. But it's not just that track - I get marked as dirty for no reason at all frequently - unless I just don't understand the reason. I don't go off the track, I don't draft an opponent and in fact I don't even have to be near an opponent to get marked as dirty.

the system is retarded, same stuff happens to me.

some laps will automatically start off 'not clean' for no reason. sometimes having nearly the entire car off the track will not flag you, sometimes one wheel will. ect ect. i don't bother with leaderboards for this reason.

It's extremely stupid, but it will flag your lap even if someone else drafts YOU. Which doesn't make sense because if someone drafts you it doesn't help you at all.

But worse than that, it regularly flags my lap as unclean the instant I finish one lap and start a new one. Like, at the very beginning of a lap, even if there is no one behind me or in front of me and I'm not off the track, the lap will be flagged anyway.

I decided to hell with the leaderboards. Just ignore it entirely. The only way to get any number of clean laps is to do free racing rather than racing against AI opponents, and I don't care enough about the leaderboards to do that. I usually try to get at least one clean lap per race in career mode, but it's common to not get any because of stupid bugs or just poor design.

A car drafting you can decrease laptimes if done long enough. It basically removes drag on the rear of the lead car. It is not as pronounced as when in the trail car but it is present. It can also cause the lead car to be very loose due to no air hitting the rear spoiler.

Notice the lack of air hitting the spoiler of the lead car.

Getting a leaderboard lap time shouldn't be a priority during a normal race, that's what hotlapping is for...
