I'm making this post as a place for overall tips with hopefully some discussion on using telemetry. I am far from an expert on this or even half-decent, but I know we have some good drivers and we can share some tips.

First - careful with that throttle cowboy, it's not an on or off position.

Second - that squealing sound you hear from your tires is not a good thing, you broke traction on specific tires and once you do that drastic measures need to be taken. Use the traction telemetry to see what is going on.

Third - it's all about weight/power transfer, this is where I believe throttle control is the most important thing.

Tip: Start on a slower car to learn the basic handling characteristics of the game, then slowly work to faster and faster cars as your skills develop.

My wife made him up a Spidey car last night. Like I said she has taken over paint duties for me and took a stab at this one. I think it turned out pretty damn good. Hopefully Spidey can save the design and apply it to other cars he drives.

You'll need to ask Spidey to post a pic since I no longer have the car and totally forgot to take a pic before I sent it to him last night (oops)!

In my experience:

Brake early to avoid entering a corner too fast. Abrupt turning in a corner = bad.

Better to enter a turn a little slow and power on early than come in hot and have to threshold brake to avoid going off the track.

Smooth inputs for turns, gas & brake.

Try to continue to watch the track instead of fixating on the car in front of you so you don't miss your brake points, etc.

Don't force passing - be patient.

That's it off the top of my head...

As Aj said, being smooth is the name of the game. Smooth on corner entry, smooth on corner exit. Smooth and easy on the brakes, smooth and easy on the throttle. This is where the steering wheel dominates the controller, for me anyways, is being able to control the inputs better.

I could write a novel about what do when and according to what type of car, but IGN has already done that! This is for Forza 1 but it applies to all racing simulators. Enjoy!

Touching on what Waldo said about being able to control the inputs better... I use the controller and I think I do a good job modulating throttle and brake (someone watch a replay and tell me if I'm full of it, heh). I don't use my fingertips on the triggers, but rather nestle it in one of the bends in my finger at a knuckle. I can't picture right now which bend I use but it feels like it gives me better control than the fingertips do. I also use the Speedfreek controller "add-on" to help with longer sweeping curves and keeping my steering thumb relaxed. On shorter corners, I still tend to see-saw it like I did before getting the Speedfreek but I'm generally able to hold my line pretty well (again, someone tell me if I'm full of it).

Being smooth definitely is the name of the game. Anything that upsets the car is bad news.

The traction telemetry seems to be incredible useful. I can see how much traction each tire is using and the forces on them. This can really help with tuning and also your racing to make sure you are driving right on the edge of traction, but not over it.

Download some of the top lap times and look at their traction. You'll see almost every tire is fully loaded giving maximum traction and they are at their limits. Their tires are also at perfect temps. You can even pick up some new lines.
