I think that all forums should delete all there content after a week
that way they could allow more bandwich eh?That way people could post pics without downsizing everything and It's all going to get deleted anyway after a week and peoples situations change from time to time anyway...what Is the point In accumulating
endless archives..as If to say a persons situation never changes?come on..!
Take a look at microsofts new O.S. Longhorn the email will delete after a certain time anyway & thats the way I figured It should always be?

You have the worst sentence structure ever! Oh, and the internet is supposed to be an archive of life past and present. Forums are gonna follow suit. I like the idea of being able to search archives and see what happened in the past.

Lets burn all the history books and forget anything ever happened!

I disagree. And you are confusing bandwidth with database storage, 2 very different things.

And Longhorn deletes your emails after a set period? I didn't know that and strongly disagree with it. Many of my emails are business records which I want and/or need to keep for a long period of time.

edit:
You have the worst sentence structure ever!
Well, he's obviously a young kid. You can tell the young ones easily nowadays from the the phonetically-based reading/writing learning structure that they've taught in US public schools since the early 90s. Terrible.

Well I mean forums such has these computer forums..why keep endless archives
accumulating & accumulating a lot of people are just beating around the bush anyway for example these "off topic" forums Do they accumulate endless archives as well?

The amount of searching through the archives is probably not much, so there is no real bandwidth degradation when you keep them, The only thing they really waste is space, and that nothing a few hard drives can't take care of.

OUr archives work well, if you need to find the answer to a problem, that's when they come in handy (expecially with a forum as large as AT, the answers to many questions can be found by doing a little searching).

As for pictures, etc - it's not ever going to happen. It has nothing to do with AT's bandwidth, but rather courtesy to users who are viewing the forums from low bandwidth connections. It doesn't kill you to click on a link.

I use my computer has a threw system I don't save any music don't save any pics
the camera has a disposable disk anyway there all saved there that is the ones I want anyway...all I use my computer for Is email, send pics direct, news, forums

Do remember that the AnandTech Forums are greater than just their Off Topic area. When a problem arises in a forum such as General Hardware or Operating Systems, people often keep working at it until a solution is found - then they post about it, and the thread quietly slips off into the archives.

A month later when someone else has the same problem, instead of reinventing the wheel they can just run a search and come up with a handy solution without having to put in an equal amount of labour as the original poster.

This isn't just relevant to hardware/software issues. People's thoughts and rumours on specific models of DVD writers, cameras, video cards, etc. are all valuable information and can come in handy later on. Not to mention how valuable running a search on "how to ____" in OT can be.

Yeah, maybe, but you're an idiot so who really cares what you do?

....In theory that is how it works but people have not been educated properly in how to use the search fucntion 😉

I'm pretty sure you got your facts mixed up. There is an option in Microsoft Office for your document to delete itself after so many days. I don't recall hearing anything about MS's next operating system to have this feature built into the e-mail system.

Yeah, bandwich is a real problem these days.
No, the amount of bandwidth archived content takes up is not much.
/checks batteries on rbloedow's sarcasm meter 😀
