Anyone ever wonder if we'll see these forums, and other forums out there, stick around for a long time?

Imagine: the young adults today, starting on these boards, and posting on them for 40 years, with fresh blood coming in all the time. Can anyone imagine the comical possibilities?

In short, I want to be like Olds. 😀

Online forums/news groups have done well over the last 25 years, even before the Internet. I don't see them going anywhere soon.

I'm speaking about the format though. I don't think AT will be here in 40 years.

I think these forums are in steep decline. This is due mainly to the rise of social networking sites like Facebook. Long before I started posting here I was at SysOpt and linuxnewbie both are pretty much done.

I would argue the social networking sites are simply a type of forum with a different layout. The premise is the same, people create accounts and post messages to each other, share pictures, participate in group discussions, etc, etc.

A key difference is the anonymity. On Youface and those other sites people know who you are. Also, your much more likely to be dealing with friends. Either way, your actions are tied to your identity. On a forum like this, I can be as big a jackass as I want and most people wont know that in the event they meet me face to face.
