Forums slow as extra viscous molasses

Is it me or is the forums reaally slow? Clicking any link on these forums takes about 6-8 seconds to load - going to forum sections, opening threads, clicking new thread, etc...

The top bar up to the notices bar loads instantly, but then it hangs there for a few seconds.

I just tested several other forums I go onto, and their pages open up almost instantly. Fusetalk, as botched as it was, wasn't this slow.

No it's not just you. I've been seeing the same thing you described since the forum change-over. Many times the page hangs and I have to click stop and reload. It does seem to be ok so far this morning though.

I have to do the same quite a lot.

It's been working super well for me. I actually came to Technical Issues just so I could post that. All the other big vBulletin implementations I frequent (DP, HoFo, NBR, XDA) all suck absolute stinky balls. They're so so slow. AT works 95% of the time.

slow here as well... half the time I load up another site in another tab to make sure my internet is still good (which it basically always is on fios)... it's just this site.

so it hasnt ever been slow for you? for me it works good for a few minutes and then slows to a crawl.

once every few hours i'll get a bog down that seems to clear up pretty quick. i dunno, i'm so used to SLOW SLOW vbulletin boards this one is blazing fast. vbulletin seems to be super slow software in general

VB is slower than any forum software I've ever seen, but I'm with the OP - this is unbelievably slow.
vB is not slow itself, it all depends on what hardware it's run on and how it's configured. Of course, with such a large forum that AT has it needs extra attention on hardware and software configuration settings apache, nginx, php, mysql etc.

Of course vB's issue for large post count forums is mysql table locking and there's various ways to work around or reduce the impact of table locking, from optimal hardware config and software tuning.

But i seem to miss the slow periods on AT forum probably due to timezones so can't be sure if it's the same issue for table locking.

Example of large but fast vB forums with 32+ million posts http://www.disboards.com/ and Alex's last blog entry on disboard configuration http://www.distechtalk.com/archives/26

I just finished work on server migration and optimisations (server config side) for several vB client's and one such forum is http://www.iwsti.com/forums/

at times, it fails to respond with very long dwell between page loads. I have to click reload on my browser (firefox) to return function. overall the forms look great and my hat is off to the thankless job you guys do to maintain anandtech.com.

It's incredibly slow. It seems like the larger a subforum is, the longer it takes to load that page. OT takes up to 10 seconds to load.

It's just you. It takes 3 seconds (timed it) for me to load OT.
well if you timed it then it must only be him? lol. the forums speeds are all over the place and the issues are intermittent so at the time he checked it was slow. its not just him as the forums act normal for a few minutes and then can be painfully slow for another few minutes.

I've also noticed some slowdowns. The funny thing is that the only time I've noticed them is on my home connection, which is Roadrunner (Milwaukee). At work we use Comcast and things have so far always been snappy when browsing Anandtech forums from there. Right now I'm visiting relatives in San Diego and using their Roadrunner, and things are snappy.

For those experiencing slow response, what ISP are you using at what relative location?

Charter 20meg connection here. the forums speed is all over the place but its sluggish more often than not.

The forum speed is all over the place for me as well. Its even slow at 1am, when my internet connnection is at its fastest (during the night when ISP load is low).

My ISP is Virgin Media 2Mb and I live in Oxford, England.
