I always tell people, "it's like a bulletin board. You can post a message and people can post answers to your messages". They usually seem to get the idea.

It's like a chat room, but the messages are left for everyone to read and reply to whenever they feel like going there, so you don't have to be present during a discusttion to take part in it.
