Forum Recommendations

I'd like to get some recommendations for good forum software.

Requirements include:
  • the ability to totally manage registration to the board (only letting in those that are approved)
  • the ability to upload pictures to posts easily

Any suggestions?

Is free a necessity?

If you need free, phpbb would be a good choice, but I don't remember if picture upload is a standard feature. Either way, it could be added and fit your qualifications.

Free is not necessary.

SMF
VBulletin
phpbb
Invision ?

Of the last three, vBulletin is the definite winner. I've heard, though, that SMF is really good too.

For the win. I think smf may have a plugin or something for wysiwig inputs? You could always try integrating something like tincymce into it, too.

I've gone with SMF. I may put a WYSIWYG editor into it later.

I like the layout a bit more than vbulletin.

Thanks for everyone's input!
