I couldn't access the forum this afternoon, kept getting an error about invalid / unsupported compression format in Waterfox, and a connection error in IE. Other web sites like FW were fine.

Weird. I clicked a Dailytech link from the main page and got a warning about it being an unsafe site. I thought the two might have been connected.

Where did you pull this from? This is the first I've heard of this (and I'm a mod, so we'd be the first to hear).
I'm afraid (or rather glad) that it wasn't anything nearly that nefarious or interesting. The problem was that the table vb_session somehow ended up being full, which of course prevented new sessions from being created and locking everyone out.

Invalid SQL:

INSERT IGNORE INTO vb_session
(sessionhash, userid, host, idhash, lastactivity, location, styleid, languageid, loggedin, inforum, inthread, incalendar, badlocation, useragent, bypass, profileupdate)
**removed**

Either that was just a side effect of another problem, or the problem itself.
