Fortron Blue Noise level? Also, any other PSUs with pre-sleeved cables?

I wanted the NeoPower but I think it's pretty damn dumb that Antec made a seperate cable for the floppy type connectors (I need connectors for floppy drive and the audigy 2 front box). If it had just one more 6 pin connection on the box, then I would buy right now. Oh well.

So I'm now currently looking at the Fortron Blue as it seems quite a bit of people on here likes it. But the problem is that I keep reading mixed things about the noise level. Apperantly the type of fan being used makes a different but noticable sound. I'm not sure if I want to deal with that as things right now are pretty quiet (using a Antec Truepower 430). Definitely would like to hear from people who went from a Truepower to Fortron. Also, what will I be missing if my psu is no longer Active PFC.

Finally, any other suggestions for sleeved PSUs? PC Power and Cooling is not an option as I'm not willing to spend that much for a PSU. I understand the benefits of buying a good PSU but I think I do just fine with PSUs for half the cost.

I saw that website when I was looking for tutorials on how to sleeve the NeoPower cables. Honestly, the service adds a significant amount to the price. For example, the Neopower would only cost me $109 from ZipZoomfly but if I get it from this site with the sleeve mod it will cost $190. I don't need sleeved cables that badly 🙂

Ultra X-Connect, don't listen to people put this down. It runs flawlessly for me, and everyone I've talked to who has one. the sleeving job is also light years better then anything you could do yourself, or find on another modular PSU

Silent PC Review has reviews of all those PSUs-- The Fortron Blue Storm, the Antec NeoPower and the Truepower. They also have a recommended list of the quietest PSUs ranked by noise level.

And NONE of those can touch a Seasonic 120mm-fan PSU in terms of quietness.

HTH.

I've got one of each of the modular power supplies on the market and the Ultra is by far the nicest cables. Those plastic caps on the ends make it. Even Performance-PC's and home-made mod jobs don't look as good.

And like QueBert, I've got two Ultra X-Connects that have been running 24/7 for over a year and haven't had a problem.

That Seasonic looks pretty good but doesn't seem too popular with online stores. I only see it at Newegg and it's 156 with shipping. Is that price pretty accurate or is Newegg overcharging?

I've seen only negative posts about the Ultra Connect that I rather take any chances 🙂

What's your config? The $156 would be for the dual-rail S12-500, which would be overkill if you don't plan to SLI or run something like 8 hard disks. If you are running a single vid-card system with just one hard drive or two, you really don't need any more than a Seasonic Super Tornado 400 (22Amps on a single 12V rail), and it only costs $75-80.

Ordered a Seasonic after a watching video review over at 3dgameman.com and seeing the hot deal over at the hotdeals section 🙂 $50 difference between the price at Ewiz and Newegg. Now I can sleep at night knowing that I finally got this done lol Thanks for the input guys and thanks wisdomtooth for the recommendation.

btw I got two wisdom teeth taken out on Monday - not a very pleasent experience lol

Well, I guess I will be future proofing my pc? Who knows if I may end up doing SLI down the road. No intentions to do so now but what the hell. Couldn't pass up the price 🙂

EDIT: Wait I can't use this on an Athlon XP based board? The title on the page says it's for P4/Xeon...

Yes you can indeed use it with an Athlon XP board. It includes a 24-pin to 20-pin adapter for older motherboards. I hope you will be as satisfied with your Seasonic as I am with mine.

BTW, hope you are healing normally. Remember, no smoking, no spitting, and no drinking through straws. 600mg Ibuprofen every 6 hours to relieve low-grade post-op pain (unless you are allergic to such NSAIDs). 😀

HTH!

WOW 98$ for S12 500Watt!! Thats a pretty hot deal there. Ive never seen it that low! Heck the 430 goes for 101$!!

The Bluestorm comes with a high speed fan.

However, there's a Nexus 400w PSU that's based on the same Fortron and comes with a medium speed quiet fan. However, the Nexus comes with only a 20pin ATX despite being ATX2.0 compliant (idiotic). Besides, it's unsleeved and is usually more expensive.

You might want to swap out that fan if you buy a Fortron since the Nexus runs fine with a lower sped fan.
