Fortissimo II, Santa Cruz, GTXP, Acoustic Edge owners... Need help with Digital out

deftron

Lifer
I got a Fortissimo II in order to run the digital out to my receiver for everything. No analog cables

It seems that I can choose to use the Digital out for either my Main sound (receiver sees as PCM) or as raw data from PowerDVD (receiver then decodes DD or DTS) , but not both at the same time.

Also, in order to switch between the two, it requires me to restart my computer ...

I dont know if there is a fix to either be able to use both at the same time (enabled at the same time, not outputing simultaniuosly)
or switch without restarting, but if there is..please let me know..

If there is no fix..does anyone know of a soundcard that will do this ? GTXP or Santa Cruz, maybe

I heard that Live and Audigy cards will only output digital to Creative digital speakers through some DIN cable, and it doesnt work
with Optical or Coax digital to a receiver.....

FIXED NOW with SB Live!

Well....the Fortissimo II was a waste...
I got my Soundblaster Live! Value to work the way I wanted

I bought a MONO mini to RCA jack at Radio Shack
and plugged that into the Digital out on the sound card
then I ran a Digital Coax cable from there to my receiver..

PCM out works great and RAW data out works great with WinDVD.

Guess I'm gonna take back the Fortissimo...I wonder why it requires a restart to go from PCM to Raw..pretty lame.

I still need a card with Digital In and Out..

I might try the Philips Acoustic Edge...anyone with experience on one of those ?
The normal Audigy or Santa Cruz doesnt have digital in and out unfortunately.
The Audigy Platinums do , but for some reaon they put all the connections on the front which is wack.
Hercules Fortissimo II and GTXP are out because they require a restart to switch from PCM to RAW.

hmmm.... i'm interesting to know the answer as well

i have a fortissimo II and havn't used the digitial anything yet 🙂

I'm considering getting either the Hercules GTXP or Turtle Beach Santa CRuz...

Does anyone with experience with these cards know how the digital out works...
Is a restart required to switch from PCM to Raw data ?

both the audigy and santa cruz can output spdif out through a mini jack.

you need to get an 1/8" mini to rca adapter (mono works for the audigy, the santa cruz needs a stereo adapter), and a digital coax cable (same as rca, but 75ohms).

run this into the digital coax port on your reciever and you're set. One problem is that digital coax can be susceptible to electrical interference in the house from things like florescent lights and bathroom fans. optical isn't affected by these two, but you might not encounter them anyhow.

it's a single cable, and all digital. both these cards can handle both pcm output and dd/dts passthrough without changing anything.

<< Is there a setting under PowerDVD to change the output from RAW(bitstream) to PCM? >>

Yes, but why would you want to output DVD signals into PCM?

You will not be able to get Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS that way.

Huma-
Does the SB Live! card output PCM and Raw data passthru from the digital jack ?
I have an SB Live Value digital and didn't realize I needed to use a Mini-jack TO RCA converter, then a COAX cable..I was trying with toslink...
The manual said it only works with Creative digital speakers, but I'm sure it could be wrong...

Yes, the Santa Cruz will switch drom PCM, to DTS, to Dolby without a restart. I just hooked mine up last night with digital coax, and used Gladiator as a test. When I stopped the movie, the reciever saw a stereo PCM signal coming to it again.
