To anyone who lives nearby, or may be passing through, Fort Riley is hosting their annual Open House. Their will be demos where you can fire all manner of weapons (240B, SAW, M-4/M-16, etc.), see Bradleys, Abrams and Palladins up close and personal. There will be static displays of weapons and equipment gathered from Iraq (both recent and Desert Storm) as well as a number of other exhibits and displays. All of this goes down on October 1st, starting at 0930 if you're interested. Entry is free of charge. There is a concert which is also free to the public starting at 1800-2200 that night (think it's country music).

Anyway, in addition to all of that, there will also be helicopter displays as well as an Air Force "low and slow" flyover as well. I will be setting up and working at a LAN party demo where we will be playing a number of combat oriented games on PCs. An Army sponsored LAN party if you will. Everyone and anyone in the area is welcome. PM me for more info if you want to visit an Army installation and hang around with soldiers, their families and their equipment. I may be able to provide some addition tour info to anyone interested as well. Again, PM me for info and I'll see that your questions are answered.

That'd be a lot of windshield time (6 hrs. round trip) in one day, otherwise I'd probably go. I have to say though, that Fort Riley isn't quite the same since the Big Red One moved.

The Big Red One is coming back finally. They'll be full strength here next summer.

Greetings from Hays, or thereabouts. Thanks for the heads-up. If I can drag the hubby out of the tractor for a day, we just might be there.

My little brother just headed out to Ft. Riley. I think he is assigned to The Big Red One.

I'm actually about an hour away. There's a new brewery in town - very good food, so this might be the year!

Yep, sure do. That's the biggest draw! Did I not mention that in the OP? Yeah, that and they have a number of tracked vehicles open for climbing in and on as well.

I believe they're going to have SAWs, 240B and M-16 or M-4s to fire (blanks of course, but fun none the less).

In previous years, they've had the M-2 (Ma Deuce, .50 Cal), but blanks don't have enough power to actuate the bolt and they jam up too often, so they've held off on using them this year and last.

And if you're into Country music, there's a pretty well known artist playing in the evening free of charge. Here are more details:

Nope, there will be stuff for all ages to do. Naturally, they won't be able to fire blanks and may be limited on a few other things, but there will be plenty of things for the kids. There will be an obstacle course for the kids to navigate and they'll get a small prize for finishing (a dog tag or something). I think they'll be allowed in the tanks and stuff, that always gets kids pretty stoked.
