He was probably ok, maybe singed a bit, and maybe some smoke inhilation, but this was a fairly small amount of mostly vaporized fuel igniting, burns really fast and hot, but it probably went out in a couple instants on its own when the spilled fuel was used up. The gear drivers wear should have kept him protected from something that was over that quickly.

I don't know for sure, though, that's just my first guess.

Umm I'd think it would probably be a little worse than that. I agree you could survive that given the very short time of the fire.

Last season, I think one of the BAR Honda's drove off with the fuel hose still in the car. Nothing happened though. Crazy sh!t happens when you're in a hurry.

That was Jos Verstappen driving for Benetton in 1994, the first year of refueling. After the fire their illegally modified fuel rig was discovered by the FIA. I don't remember anybody being seriously hurt but I don't think that car continued in the race.

A lot of bad things happened that year in F1 within the span of a few races.

Yep, and Jos was relatively unharmed...although that is a very scary thing to happen to a driver.

That was the year Senna and Ratzenberger were killed at Imola. Rubens Barrichello almost died that same weekend in a horrible shunt that saw his car get airborne straight into some fencing along the course. That is one of the most violent crashes I've seen in a long time.

That was Steve Matchett (the current F1 commentator on SpeedTV) at the back who got engulfed in fire. He describes the event in his book "A Mechanics Tale".
