the tires have grooves to keep the speed of the cars down.
schumacher is a great driver in the most reliable fast car on the track. the bmws can be quicker but they're not so reliable. so they DNF, and schumacher wins.

oh, was expecting something else :) I am german so I dont have ABC but F1 is fairly boring this year (Ferrari wins and wins and wins) but on the lower rankings there is quite some fighting....

But I am looking forward to the Indianapolis GP - good chance for BMW to win (strongest engine - this weekend they said they reached more than 19000rpm :) - if the engines dont blow

thats a pretty big if. but yeah, if it doesn't blow that superspeedway part really favors bmw.

Schumacher wins even when the BMW's finish. He's won 66% of the races so far this year, that's 10 out of 15. That's not just other cars retiring. Granted, he hasn't retired in over 12 months of racing (17 races and more), but he's also a damned good driver.
Indianapolis better be good, I'm coming over from the UK to watch it.

Yes. It's ashame really. In 1998, in an attempt to slow down F1 cars in the corners, the FIA mandated grooved tires instead of slicks (they also made the chassis thinner). It's taken them 4 years and a tire war between Michelin and Bridgestone, but the F1 cars are now faster than they were in 1997. However, it has made passing a lot more difficult.

Not only does ABC have F1 rights for Monaco, Monza and Indy Grand Prix, but Bernie Ecclestone's giving them free Digital coverage. The rest of the world gets the "world feed" which sucks (worse camera angles, less onboards, no radio communication, etc.). The only crappy thing about ABC is they're heavily editing the race.

The U.S. GP should be okay. I don't particularly like the infield part of the course but the straight into turn 1 should provide great passing. What I'm really looking forward to is the Japanese Grand Prix. Suzuka is just awesome, and hopefully Honda will have the "Suzuka Special" and Villeneuve will be competitive and get some points.

he does, but Indianapolis is a different story, its a high speed track, less downforce is needed and engine power is king. But yeah in the last races it seemed like Ferrari is driving a whole different ligue.

"There are only three true sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountain climbing: all the rest are merely games." It's nice to see actual racing here in the US. A rare enough event now that IRL has pushed CART to the sidelines of TV airtime. I like that the ALMS is gaining popularity in terms of airtime.

Speed Channel covers the rest live. Ecclestone is trying to increase popularity in the U.S.. His choice of races suck though. Monaco is a parade and only on the calendar for the rich and famous. Monza is all about the car. The U.S. GP suffers from a mediocre circuit in Indy. It is my understanding that next year however, ABC will get even more races and Speed Channel won't. Speed Channel's president participated in an Internet chat and stated they would have even fewer races next year because Bernie wants ABC to have them. Interestingly enough, F1 is more popular in the U.S. than CART according to Speed Channel's president. Show the Americans Spa, Suzuka and Malaysia and I'm sure they'd be hooked. Oh, and 2004 brings us the Bahrain GP;-) No joke!

Oh and about editing. I already watched the race on TSN here in Canada and am watching it again. Monza is always a fast race but it seems they're cutting a half-dozen laps at every opportunity.

EDIT: Hmm, on second look, it seems that ABC might actually be playing the whole race. It's weird, it seems to be going faster than the footage I saw earlier today but maybe it's all the extra camera angles providing the illusion. I know that Monaco was heavily edited however.

Yeah, this year was a bore. But I suppose it's like basketball with the Lakers and before that the Bulls. We're witnessing history. Unfortunately, this year's title was all about the domination of Ferrari than Michael Schumacher. To some extent last year's was too, but this year it was really pronounced. I just wish Ferrari would let their drivers actually race instead of this last-pit-stop rule where they let the driver who's ahead after the last round of pit-stops win.

Next year should be fun. Ecclestone's been stirring the pot and we might just find Villeneuve reunited with Panis at Toyota...hopefully a competitive one at that. If we don't see Villeneuve elsewhere next year, the BAR (which won't be called that but probably just Honda) could be more competitve because Willis will have been able to start with a clean slate. And Frank Williams has said next year's Williams will be radically new because they made the mistake of being too conservative this year.

Unfortunately, Ferrari will also be better than they are now. I guess we can just hope for lots of unreliability:)

Ralf Schumacher was penalized for cutting the chicane at the start (him and Montoya went at it), but before he could serve his penalty his engine blew up early on. Montoya broke a bargeboard and wasn't really a factor in the race after that. Then he rode the curbs a bit too harshly and broke the suspension and retired in the pits.

I'd just like to add ABC/ESPN racing coverage is horrible and you forgot to add crappy to your description of the IRL. ;)
