Former Steeler Dies Lifting Weights

PIITSBURGH (SportsTicker)--Former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker David Little
died last Thursday while lifting weights at his home in Miami. He was 46.
Little suffered a heart ailment while working out and suffocated when the
barbell he was lifting fell on his throat, the Steelers announced on Tuesday.
Little played his entire 12-year with the Steelers before retiring in 1993. He
started 125 of 179 games and was named to the Pro Bowl in 1990.
Little, the younger brother of Miami Dolphins Hall of Fame guard Larry Little,
is survived by his wife and three children.

That's why if you're lifting at home and alone you don't secure the weights. Not saying it would have helped him but if he would have been able to tip the weights a little they would have fallen off.

I've never secured mine, and I have oh-crap bars to hold up a bar if I lose it while doing bench press.

If I read that right, the heart ailment lead to the weight dropping on his throat?

Yeah, there is no good reason you shouldn't either have some saftey bars or somebody spotting you.

yes, that is why i said he must've had a weakened heart for some reason.
