I think he deserves death for indirectly contributing to thousands of deaths - but that's for other reasons.

Regardless of it being a light sentencing - the fact that pieces of shit like this finally got something is refreshing. Kuddos.

I think it's great news. I hope other politicians think twice before they do what he did. But I bet there will be cushy job waiting for him when he gets out.
I also wonder if he is going to get raped in prison. His wife is going away also.

Please. Most of them know they can mismanage and outright steal TRILLIONS and get away with it scott free. The only thing *any* of these "ruling-class" douchebags regrets is if they get caught. Just about every one of them believes they are 100% entitled to live the high life and construct their own pyramid monuments to themselves (legacies) on everyone else's dime.

The only thing any politician scumbag is "thinking twice" about is how to rig the system further so that whatever slip up allowed these two to get busted (and really, in D.C. circles for absolute peanuts) doesn't happen again.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/...-jackson-jr-sentence-20130814,0,6369649.story

'Former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. was sentenced today to 30 months behind bars and his wife, Sandi, got a year in prison for separate felonies involving the misspending of about $750,000 in campaign funds.'

They got off very lightly. I think they deserved a lot more.

What do you think?

Surprising thing is that Obama let his Justice Department prosecute at all.

Either Jackson Jr. got his profile too high during the IL Governor's trial when the fact emerged that he attempted to buy Obama's old senate seat. Or his old man did something that alienated the present administration.

Fact is another former democratic politician, Jon Corzine, was chief executive of a company that 'lost' 1.6 billion dollars of its customer's money. And when he was called before Congress, all he had to say was 'I don't remember what happened to that 1.6 billion dollars.'

Then again, unlike Jackson Sr, Corzine did raise a half million dollars for Obama's presidential campaign.

If they convicted Jackson Jr. of stealing $750,000, its very likely that he stole much more and plea bargained it down.

I can remember one of my European friends telling me, 'You know, you Americans laugh at us because in Europe we have royal families. But you have the same thing here, except that you don't call the royal's. You call them politicians.'

Anyway, I find it a bit surprising.

The DoJ is illegal.

I was thinking that Eric holder's racist ass would've done quite the opposite though... that is, I'm surprised he didn't try to cover this up though for his fellow (racist) black man.

I'm waiting for Sharpton or Jackson senior to make a speech about how if he was white, he wouldn't have gotten any jail time. Therefore he should be completely exonerated. Then I'm going to buy a 6-pack of the most powerful beer I can find...

jackson SR is staying far away from this. I don't see Sharpton weighing in on this either.

They sell one beer (here in Canada anyhow) ... pretty sure it's German one ... and it's called something like "Strong Beer"

I forgot if it's 13 or 17% ... but i tried it once (they sell it by the bottle here as well, as it's imported and more expensive than Domestic or US ones) ... and it's WICKED!

I would hardly call 30 months in prison, light.

Jackson's sentence is substantially below the Federal Guidelines of 46 to 57 months.

The man got caught stealing $700,000. We don't know how much he actually stole.

He has been awarded an $8500 monthly 'disability' payment and when he turns 65 he will get a $45,000 annual pension.

I'd be surprised if he serves more than half of his sentence. Growing up in Chicago, I knew a lot of people that would be glad to serve that kind of time if they could get the payout that Jackson is getting.

One of the purposes of sentencing criminals is to provide a deterrence to future offenders. That is, to demonstrate that it is uneconomical to commit crime.

This sentence won't provide any deterrence. The fact that 4 out of the last 7 Illinois Governors have been convicted and imprisoned indicates that Illinois politicians are not deterred from stealing by these type of sentences.

Quite the opposite in fact. No wonder the state is broke.

Wait another super corrupt state that just so happens to be long term liberal controlled ?

Oh and most of them have extremely strict restrictions on self defense and guns so they have no crime, at least they have that going for them.

Minor note, in Illinois both Republican and Democratic Governors have become convicted felons.

Rod Blagojevich – Democratic Governor from 2002 through 2009, when he became the first Illinois governor in history to be impeached. Convicted of numerous corruption charges in 2011, including allegations that he tried to sell or trade President Barack Obama's old Senate seat.

George Ryan – Republican Governor from 1999 through 2003. After leaving office, was convicted of racketeering for actions as governor and secretary of state. In November 2007, began serving a 6 1/2 year sentence in federal prison.

Dan Walker – Democratic Governor from 1973-1977. Pleaded guilty to bank fraud and other charges in 1987 related to his business activities after leaving office. Spent about a year and a half in federal prison.

Otto Kerner -- Democratic Governor from 1961-1968. Resigned to become judge, then was convicted of bribery related to his tenure as governor. Sentenced to three years in prison.

Call me unsympathetic if you want, but the facts indicate that these politicians are getting rich by stealing and they are not being deterred by prison sentences they are getting.
