My old motherboard had an onboard promise raid controller, My new board has no raid so I got an Epox raid controller with a chip made by Aralion, the only noticable difference is the promise took around 30min to format 80gb, the aralion takes 30 seconds...
 
Yup...sounds like you were doing a quick format on the original. Even on the fastest controllers, you won't be able to do a normal format on 80gig that quick.
