Formatting problem

well long story short
ipod crapped itself (no surprise there)
I think it overheated cause I had it in my car
anyways - it wouldnt even turn on for 2 days
but now it does but on windows and itunes it says it needs to be formatted

I griped at that cause I had to restore all my music but I did it anyway

now the 40 gig hdd has turned into 16gig WTF??

btw I think it had 16gig free before it killed itself
now the ipod restorer and windows only recognizes the drive as 16 gig
is there some way to reformat the drive back to 40gig
there has to be some software tools that can do this right?
