Formatting/Partitioning software?

Feel kind of dumb asking but, what does everyone recommend or use here in the 21st century for formatting hard drives? For whatever reason, I have always relied on windows install discs for taking care of any formatting needs. Ive never had a need for anything else really.

What do you people use? Free?

unless doing something fancy with the partitions, windows does the job, why pay for something that may only be a front end to the windows backend software.

If you want something different than the Windows built-in utility try GParted. It is free and it uses GNOME environment. Just burn a CD and use it to boot the machine.
