Formatting notebook with USB optical drive

Hi, I got a BenQ 6000N not long ago, and it uses a USB combo drive rather than a built-in one. I'm intending to format, and have done so plenty of times before on my PCs, but this will be the first time I'll be doing it on a notebook. I didn't have any concerns until last week when I was formatting and reinstalling win xp on one of my PCs (Epox 8RGA+ mobbo), the USB ports were not working at all during the installation, so I had to dig up a couple of PS/2 - USB adapters for my mouse and keyboard. After win xp has installed, I reinstalled USB drivers and the USB ports are working fine again.

Is this a problem specific to the nforce2 chipset, though it's the first time I've encountered this problem on the 8RGA+, or on any other mobbo I've owned? Should I just go ahead and format my notebook the same way as I've been doing with my PCs?

Thanks in advance for any advice.
