Formatting new HD - the process freezes at 47%... is it broken?

Hey, y'all...

I'm pretty upset - this new Maxtor 120 GB HD that I've just bought seems to be a dud.

I tried three times already to format it and install Windows 2000 on it, and the damn thing just hangs while formattting, at 47%... the last thing I tried was hooking it up to an external USB2 enclosure and formatting it under Windows XP, but it seems the progress bar has also stopped at what would be 47%... The next thing I'll have to do is download the Powermax utility and check it out, but it seems to me this is a dud, and I have to return it to the store...

Is there anything else that I can try?

F@#$ !

I hate buying HDs... they're the only component that I really try to fiddle with as little as possible... can you guess I had previuos bad experiences? Funny enough, come to think about it, they were all with maxtor, maybe it's time to change brands...

Seagate

unfortunately, the store where I go the HD doesn't carry Seagate... only Maxtor and WD... and they'll only exchange stuff (not refund)... I wonder if I should go with WD instead...

Just did a repair on a pc with the same issue. Theirs was a Maxtor 80gb drive, and was hanging up at around 71%. Pulled the drive, swapped in a new 80gb WD and all is well. Damn Maxtor, ill never waste my money on one thats for sure.
