formatting hardware for xp

im trying to format an HDD to work in windows xp, from mac os 10.2. so i set it as a slave, connect it, its recognized by disk utility just fine.

i go to the erase tab, and i get the options of formatting as Mac OS Extended, Mac OS Standard, MS-Dos File System, and Unix File System.

MS-Dos is the one i want, right? IIRC, xp uses ntfs, right? is ms-dos the same as ntfs?

if your formating as ms-dos. it'll most likely format it as fast32 i would think.

IIRC, OSX can only read NTFS, so yes, it will create a FAT32 volume.

Google is your friend. I know very little about Macs and found all this out pretty quickly.

Jaguar (10.2) doesn't read NTFS, but Panther (10.3) can. You'd probably be happier if you upgraded to 10.3.4.

In Jaguar, the "MS-DOS File System" option means FAT32, not NTFS. If you want to format FAT32, it looks like you're better off formatting it in XP, not OS X, and you should not have any partition over 80GB or the drive may randomly become unreadable on the Mac.

Being a mac admin, I can assure you that the format option in OS X is for FAT32
