i reinstalled xp pro and converted the file format to ntfs but i wanna start over and reformat the ntfs partition... my old w98 startup disk doesnt recognise the ntfs partition and so i cannot use the format c: command in dos on that drive.. how do i go about formatting an ntfs partition??

thx!

Pop in your WinXP CDROM, boot from it, and then do the format from within the Setup.

does the xp pro cd have a folder on it where you can create the setup floppies like the win2k pro cd does? If so, where on the cd can i create the startup floppies from?

You don't need the floppy boot disk - just make your CD drive bootable and use the XP CD. It will boot and has FDISK, etc., on it.

As an aside, I have formatted an NTFS drive with an old 98 boot disk - it doesn't have to "see" anything. It doesn't see a new drive unformatted either, but it will FDISK it and format it.

So, boot with your 98 "E" Diskette, then run FDISK - after going through those procedures and creatring a primary DOS partition, it will Format C: with /system as requested.

You didn't create a startup disk when you installed w98?. If you have another pc with w98 you can create a bood disk there, or make one at a friends pc. Then you can do an fdisk and reformat.

You can also use your Win98 startup disk, run FDISK and choose the option to "Delete Non-DOS partition". After that, you recreate the partition and then format it.
