Formatting a machine...how do I keep the NAV subscription?

This might be better suited for one of the other forums, but I need an answer ASAP, and I know this is the most active forum. My mom has a Dell running WinME, and I'll be upgrading it to 2K so it might actually be halfway stable. Anyway, when she got the machine, it had Dell's 90-day trial of Norton AV 2001. After the trial expired, she bought it on-line, and she's been using it since then. Since I plan to format the machine before installing the new OS, I'll need to re-install NAV for her. Problem is, since she bought it electronically, there's no CDs or anything for the software. I looked around Symantec's site for awhile and couldn't find any help. Anyone ever done this before, and have any advice for me on how to get her subscription back onto the machine after I've formatted it?

Thanks so much.

Jacob

You didn't get a key code or something?

If worst comes to worst, you can buy NAV at Newegg for like 5 bucks. Have to buy some hardware with it, though.

If you own a current copy of NAV you can install it on her machine and do the upgrades just like you do on your own. Why are you so paranoid? Just install the software that you pirated through Kazaa.

You gotta be kidding me.

I can see pirating PhotoShop so you can play with family pictures, but stealing Norton AntiVirus? YOU CAN GET IT FOR LESS THAN FIVE BUCKS! It's a good program - so spend a little dough and support the company. Sheesh.

She deletes all of her e-mails after reading them, so it's long gone...

Symantec has DigitalRiver take care of online orders, call Symantec, they'll give you the 800 # to Digital River and they'll verify the purchase and send you another email.

I have Norton SystemWorks 2001. Legal copy; I bought it. I also have it on every single machine I own. Every time I do a fresh install (wipe/reload) I get another 365 days of FREE updates, automatically. I assume it's this way with all of the "NAV Family."

I know Norton embeds itself deep in the registry. Just wipe/reload and keep doing the LiveUPdate until you have "the most current version" of everything.

I did a wipe/reload on my Secondary Rig last week. I used the same copy of SystemWorks that I've been using for almost two years now. Perfect install. Perfect updates and 358 more days to go. :D

good luck. :)

Unfortunately NAV for Windows ME is not gonna work with Windows 2000 or XP. You must install the apropriate version for Win2k/XP.

You might want to take a look at Linux if all your mom need is emailing, internet browsing & word processing, because it is a little more secure than windows with out the need for buggy software such as NAV. Linux is not difficult to use, because the average user only click on the icon that they need to launch their program.

Formatting a machine...how do I keep the NAV subscription?

Just reinstall and run Liveupdate until it's again current. The subscription records are kept @ the Symantec server, so you'll have exactly the amount of time left to upgrade. At least that's the case with my Norton AV 2K2 and Personal Firewall 2K2.

Or you can go to the Symantec website and download the virus definitions as a stand-alone file and apply them later on after doing a clean install. It helps very well, especially if you have a slow connection.
