formatting 120gb hard drive...how long should it take?

im currently formatting(ntfs) the drive on my desktop pc(posting from laptop now) using the disk tools in winxp but am unable to use the comp during the process because the computer keeps freezing every few seconds. anyone know if this is normal? if it is, how long should this take before i can use my pc again?

No, your issue is not normal. I would think a conventional (non-quick) NTFS format on a 120GB drive would take ~20min.
