I am in the process of formatting a new hard drive for installation of xp. I would like to set up the drive under NTFS, but I am not entirely sure of the process. Do I first format the drive as a FAT 32 drive and then in the installation of xp select NTFS? Or, is there a one step process? Appreciate any help.

if its anything like win2k setup, it will have an option to do so even if the hardrive has never been formated before. gl

it is exactly like win2k as far as setup. format your drive, you can delete whatever partitions you want before running install, or you can do it when you install it. there will be an option to delete any partitions, create one, etc, just like win2k. It will format it as ntfs if you want it to with the setup, but if you want to use fat32 you have to format the partition prior to running install, because there is no option to use fat32 in the install, just like win2k, other than selecting an already formated, and in this case, fat32 partition.

I have no experience with W2K. In order to have the drive even seen I believe it has to be formatted prior to installing xp. My question is, unless I'm completely ignorant, is there a one step process to format and designate NTFS?

You will be given the choice when you install XP to partition and choose the file system you want it to format it with. No need to do anything before you run the install.

Boot to the CDROM, or you can run it from an existing operating system. Booting to the CDROM would be preferable.
