I tried to format a partition of my drive using the right click - format but it says that windows was unable to perform the operation. It doesn't state why. I tried doing the fat32/fat but none work.

Earlier I coldn't get the partition to format on any part of the drive. I inspected the drive and reinstalled it and formatted again to install windows (2k) and it worked. Now the other part of the partition isn't formatting. (the error said the drive might be damaged. I hope not ... i just got it from an rma 2 months ago).

So is there any other software i can download?
Anyone know why my drive won't format?

Thanks!

Oh... and i just upgraded to an a64/chaintech vnf250 ... maybe there's something i need to change/do ???

hmmm ... is that boot disk the same as when i'm setting up windows and it asks me to format the partitions ... cuz that didn't work earlier ... says the drive may be damaged.. never had this problem before...

i'll try out a boot disk from somewhere ...

Maybe you should do a thorough scandisk first then.

If you have at least one Maxtor drive, you can download Maxblast for floppy or CD. It will let you format, low-level format, partition, and etc...

well ... i can't get the format working ... says / isn't a valid param ... and that C: or D: is not a valid drive

This never happened before...maybe my drive is damaged...

EDIT: OK i deleted the partition and recreated one. I formatted with ntfs and windows worked fine. Formatted 2nd partition in 5 secs... maybe it was cuz i put fat32 as the system file originally, which i never did before ... i'll stick to this system.

Thanks for your responses.

go ahead and run the WD utility then... most of them offer a low-level format option.
