Format/Reinstall Problem

I just wiped and reinstalled for a friend and now for some reason he has a boot selection screen with two instances of XP Home. I know that the top choice is the correct one but have no idea how to get rid of the other boot option. Any ideas?

Right-click My Computer and choose Properties, then the Advanced tab, then Startup And Recovery, and you can fix that there. Or edit C:\BOOT.INI (hidden OS file, so change the Folder Options settings to view it).

Oh, and to prevent that in the future:

1) run Windows Setup just far enough to delete all the existing HDD partitions, then exit Windows Setup by pressing the F3 key twice.

2) now start Windows Setup a second time and this time go all the way through the installation.

Thanks a lot for the help. I thought that what you posted in the second message was probably the root of the problem but wasn't too sure. Thanks again.

I have the same problem on my freshly installed Hard Drive/ Windows XP. Here is what my boot.ini says, I need to know what exactly to delete from it, thanks. The two options I get at startup are "Windows XP Pro" and "Previous Operating System on C:"

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
C:\="Previous Operating System on C:"
