it is a sony laptop model #pcg-f290 It uses an IBM HD. It will format until 16% then it stops and so this laptop is useless! Does it need a new hd?

Doesn't sound good. The only thing I can suggest, is to confirm the problem with a utility. I've always used the manufacturers diagnostic utility(download from their website). IBM must have this available. That way, if the drive is in warranty, there will be confirmation from their own software that the drive is bad.

Scandisk is also a decent util to check on the condition of the disk, but yes, it sounds like it may be gone. If you're in luck, RMAing it will bring back something better though ;)

it symtom could also mean that scandisk is attempting to mark/read/write the data to another part of the disk... sometime it could take up to 50 hrs..(unforunately i had to do this pc) but like laper and lai RMA that puppy if it still in warranty..not to mention is get rid of any bad sector the hard drive may have
