Format and start new or buy new PC? (based on specs)

Hello!

I apologize if this is an overly simplistic question but i'm trying to decide whether to buy a new desktop (or laptop) or keep my current one and format and reinstall Windows. Like my cars, I like to keep them until I absolutely need to replace, to avoid wasting money and being wasteful of electronics.

My needs are really only browsing the internet and some light video watching, a la youtube. I don't game or need anything too powerful. For my crazy spreadsheets, I use my work laptop which is pretty powerful.

My home PC is pretty slow and I typically format and install Windows every few years but before I spend time doing that, I want to make sure that I shouldn't just buy a new PC. I used to be somewhat hardware competent and had build a PC or two many many years ago, but back then it seemed like processor speed and memory were the main things to know. Now that it's not just gigahertz but "dual core" vs "quad core" etc., it's a little harder for me to decipher.

My PC's current (relevant) specs:

Lenovo
Pentium G620 CPU at 2.60GHz
4 GB Ram

Anything else i should note that would be helpful? Thanks in advance for any help or pointing me in the right direction!

You should build (or buy) a new PC. That system will struggle with just about everything. It was a budget CPU in 2011, so it's had a good run.

Just about anything modern will run circles around that PC.

This time of year through black Friday you can find good deals on pre-built systems like Dell, or on individual components if you want to build. Whichever route you go, I'd recommend a SSD for your operating system.

Gnu/linux would add a little life to it by saving resources, and will work with your use case scenario. Otherwise, you're the only one that can judge when it's time to upgrade. I'm typing this on an eleven year old machine, and it's just fine for my needs. Hardware is failing, so I'll have to build a new machine sooner than later, but performance is fine for me. It might not be fine for you :shrugs:
