Format a CD or DVD?

Do I need to format a CD or a DVD prior to using it?

Will the Windows OS "format" do the job? If the Windows format is utilized, can one use the "quick format"?

If Windows format won't do the job, what simple and easy piece of software is available to handle this? I do not want to create multimedia or anything of the sort, I just want to be able to store data and possibly create a couple of boot disks.

[EDIT] I am using RW disks. Can I use Windows "file delete" to delete a file?

As always many thanks to those who reply.

Hi, You only format a disk to use Nero's NCD or Roxio/Adaptec Direct CD or equivalent. That is to use a CDR or CDRW as if it was a big floppy disk. Jim

But for normal use, just put it in the drive, and use Nero, Easy CD Creator, or whatever. CD/DVD-R/RW discs don't need formatting in the conventional sense. I think that DVD+R/RW discs get formatted when they are written to, but it's automatic.
