Which hand is the knife when cutting?

  • Cut with knife in right hand, as any civilized person would do.

  • I cut with knife in my left hand because I am a filthy unwashed animal.

I'm right handed and cut with my left. The fork never leaves my right hand, nor does the knife ever leave my left throughout the meal.

The "Official" correct way is to have knife in right and fork in left to cut food, then put knife down switch fork to right hand and eat.

knife in left hand and fork in right and eating while holding both is dead wrong.

etiquette wise.

I keep the knife in the right and fork in left hand and dont switch. I'm not sure why one would switch...you already have the food stabbed with the fork, just bring it up and finish it off.

It is shocking to me that my wife (and her entire family) cut with knife in the left hand and insist that is the correct way. We might be getting divorced over this.

My question is how long you have dated your wife and been married. Just wondering why it has it taken so long for you to notice this?

But then I am from CA so that probably means I should just shut the hell up.

Fork left, knife right.

And as a lefty I never swap hands to eat. It saves time so I can savor dessert.

Why would you need to cut your food? Did the Lord not give you hands to pull, teeth to rip, and breath to spit out the bones?

I eat with my right hand, so fork is in my right, knife in my left. As I cut, I already am holding what I'm cutting with my fork, so I can immediately eat it with my right hand without switching utensils around. I'm trying to imagine cutting with my right and it just feels awkward to do that. Though I might be the weird one, I also eat ice cream cones or anything of that nature with my left hand. I also shoot left in sports. In the medieval times they probably would have burned me alive for that.

I don't even understand how you could hold the knife in your left hand unless you were left-handed. :hmm: Of course I've never really understood the utensil switching thing either (cutting, then switching the fork over to the right hand); seems like a complete waste of time and energy.

True. I'm not from CA, but I lived there the last ~7 years. I moved away just so that I could resume participating in normal society.

Knife always goes in the right hand. You cut while holding the meat still with the fork in your left hand. Then you quickly transition the fork to the right hand and eat it. Rinse and repeat.

Always maintain eye contact with those in front of you that also have weapons. Preferably with your back against a wall to prevent sneak attacks from behind.

Someone take a lunge at you while the knife is down? Well that's when you whip out the classic:
POW THE OL' FORK IN THE EYE!!!
They'll never see it coming. Or anything ever again for that matter.

Interesting how all the Canadians that have responded hold the knife in their left hand. And by interesting I mean confirmation that you're all from a different planet.

This isn't an issue. The big issue is how do you hold the fork when cutting. It's to be held cradled in the palm of the hand with the index finger pointed towards the tines as pictured below. Holding it any other way and you're just embarrassing yourself.

That is just too weird. Being a righty my left hand is so uncoordinated that if I tried to cut with it my hand would slip and accidentally poke somebody in the eye!

It doesn't make any sense to hold the knife in any other hand but your dominant hand. When you're holding a fork and knife the knife is the primary tool you are manipulating, thus, you hold it in your dominant hand. The fork is only stabilizing/,lifting (which is arm coordination, not hand) so you hold that in your non-dominant hand.

You fuckboys are bass-ackwards.

I have absolutely no idea why but for some reason the combination of your avatar and this post made me laugh hysterically for a solid 90 seconds.

I chose the wrong poll by accident cause i am left handed. Anyway, since i am left handed, i prefer my fork in my left hand and my knife in my right hand. I am civilized after all. :)
And if i would have my fork in the right hand, i would poke myself in the cheek and nose.

Oh whoops, I totally wrote that backwards. The only way to do it is the way in the picture posted by boomerang below me. Fork left, knife right; never switching over.

Sorry about that.
