Ok so my friend has this laptop and he uses Windows XP HOme edition and he had some importent stuff on his laptop and he forgot his passowrd. how do he get it back so he can log into windows xp?

How do you forget your password...anyway you can use an XP CD and reinstall system files, which will let you keep personal documents. if you don't know how to use an XP CD, then there are ways to edit the registry to remove the password. search google for password recovery tools...

easy linux tools out there if you have a floppy to reset the password.
how can you edit the registry if you dont know the password?

If he didn't assign an admin password, F8 to safe mode during startup, choose adminstrator, go to control panel, users, remove password from his account.

Otherwise, UBCD4Win boot disc has a program called Password Renew....

If you have a computer. I would recommend buying an Adapter

Take the hard drive out ouf the notebook and hook it up to a computer with the adapter as a second drive. You should be able to access your files.

thx. but i don't think my friend would buy it before i help him by booting in from safe mode and one of those appz.

Thanks for the tip though.

anyway you cant access your files from an extrnal hookup anyway cause you have a passowrd, and your windows files are protected.

Sure you can. I do it all the time. As long as they are not encrypted.

That's completely untrue. If you have physical access to the drive, you can drop it in another WinXP machine and take ownership of the entire drive and give yourself access. Only so long as the drive isn't encrypted with EFS or any other form of encryption.

As far as simply resetting the password, just go to THIS LINK.
