forgot password for winxp, any to recover?

Hi,
I'm trying to help a friend. He forgot his login password. Is there a way to recover the password other than having to reformat? Thanks

1) restart to safe mode and see if you can hop on the Administrator account. You can then go to control panel > user accounts and remove the password on the account you are trying to access

If it is a Dell or HP, you may be able to get in using safe mode with a blank password with the administrator account. You can then reset whatever account you'd like.

You can also reset the password of any account using another method, but I'd give safe mode a shot first.

reset in safe mode, luckly the admin account don't have a password
