I have windows xp and installed realplayer and now it is used to open all my files. I have other applications tha I would like to use, but everytime I change the setting, everything always reverts back to real player as the default app. Am I missing something? I have tried the OPen with command and selected "always use this application for this type of file" I have tried to use the properties in the Media Player and Winamp to associate the various files but after I use any program, it reverts back to realplayer... Any help?

Real Player is evil.. Delete it. :)

Actually I think you have to tell Real Player not to associate with certain files. NOt sure where to find it anymore but it should be in the settings somewhere.

When I installed unReal Player it also tried to take over my system.

Uninstalling it sort of fixed the problem. You may have to go into each program and change the associations from unReal Player to the program you want.

XP comes with Media Player 8x and works quite well for me. I am listening to mP8 right now in the background to radio station KHAHA which is a comedy radio station originating in Los Angeles/Hollywood.

:D

Very true.

My dad is p1$$3d at me because I won't let him install RealPlayer to listen to some audio clips from news sites (he knows that one can read the exact same text as is said in the audio clip, but insists occasionally that I install the thing; there is a reason that his account doesn't have administrator access ;)).

Right Click the file you want to change the association for.'

Get Properties

In 2K/XP there is an "Opens with..." section

Click change and there you go.

I tried all these solutions you guys gave and none of them work permanately. What I finally got to work was in Real player there is a option to "check assciations" that you need to need to check off, as well as unselecting all of the files it is associated with inside the preferences. (I found that the program re-associates everything every time you open it.)

I had the same problems with unReal Player as it tried to take over my system. My solution was to uninstall unReal Player and that solves the problem of it reassociating itself over an over again.

My suggestion is to dump unReal Player and get rid of it for good. MP8 is good enough for most of what one wants to do with noises coming over the internet. (noises = music, voice, videos and whatever else one can log onto over the Internet)

Absolutely! Anyway, is it just me, or does it seem that sites that use RealPlayer exclusively for their audio and video needs tend to suck in other ways as well? ;)
