My new job requires me to do desktop support as well as maintaining the servers. No big deal since many of our users are competent. Except for the executive assistant who's an a$$ kisser and freaks out over the dumbest things ever. Anyways, I got my first taste of what it's like to do desktop support after 2 yrs of not having to do it.

She calls me freaking out that her outlook doesnt work. Ughhh ... I'm like ok ... I show up and she tells me her signature isn't working. I said yes it is but she was referring to the formatting. Basically I had to force her to write her emails in Plain Text rather than use word as the editor under Outlook. Anyways, she freaked out and said she couldnt send the email like that since her font in her signature looked messed up. So, i had to reinstall Word (word was corrupted so I forced outlook to use plain text while I dealt with other more important issues). End users ... ughh

We need cliffs?

1 - Forced Outlook to compose email in Plain Text due to Word acting funky (told user I would get back to it since I had other things to take care of).

2 - End user called freaking out saying Outlook didnt work (your typical SOS message from end-users fearing the worst when it really isnt).

3 - Signature lost it's HTML formatting (nice fonts ...)

4 - Reinstalled Word so she could send her email since she refused to send it out the way it was.

Yeah almost any IS/IT job has you doing desktop support even if it's just the president of the company catching you in the hallway. Most user's think all computer work is the same :).

I am pretty good at the desktop as I am a power user at home/office. I tend to tweak my software and explore it's functions / menus. Many people go out and buy Word when wordpad would be enough, Photoshop CS2 suite when an older version of Photoshop would be sufficient or even MS Paint :). The extra functions always seem to hurt rather than help them.

Still other's stupidity is a good reason I have a job :). Also that said even though I am better at PC's than say almost any of the senior management of my corporation, I do not have the skills they have that got them where they are.
