Forgive my ignorance, Home Alone 2 DVD playing 4 sided box???

So my wife and kids could care less but I just about pulled my hair out when I came in the family room noticing them watching home alone 2 and it was entirely boxed in.

Panny BD player set to auto. Vizio full array LED set to auto so I check DVD box. I'm not getting what's going on. It says "letterbox" and it's definitely 1.85:1 so why is it being boxed in?

Zooming for now which is another horror. Ugh.

that is just how old dvds are. they added the bars to the 4:3 image to make them 16:9. so now on 16:9 tv's they have a black box around them. i watched dead presidents a while ago and had the same issue.
 
After doing some thorough reading, it appears you are correct. Bummer.

Well, no different than buying records, then cassettes, then cd's, it appears another wave of purchasing is in order, right?

When in the F will we actually ever really OWN the media we buy?
