forget the NEC LCD20WGX2... the samsung SyncMaster 215TW is the bomb

I don't know about that review...where are the numbers? Did they just give it a score based on how they felt when they used it? 😛

Hey forget the NEC20WMGX2, you say... What panel is that LCD using?

Very, very nice. Thanks for the post!

np

it looks like a great monitor, forgot to mention the all the adjustments you can make to this monitor that other 20.1inch screens dont have, and you can rotate this baby in to portrait mode too. 8bit panel and 8ms grey to grey

Testing the 215TW using DisplayMate revealed a very solid performance. The 256 Intensity Level Colour Ramp showed smooth gradation across all the colours. The 215TW managed to turn in a perfect performance in the Colour Scales test with every colour dropping off uniformly at the last block, while there was no hint of compression at the high intensity end. The only small grumble was with the 64 Step Greyscale test, where there was an ever so slight hint of green evident in the middle of the scale, although once again there was no compression on show at either end.

if you read the entire thing theres stuff in there somewhere.

i mean with all its inputs i can have my computer, 360 and a stand alon Digital TV tuner all plugged in, and its got Picture in Picture so i can watch TV whilst i use my computer and ill at last have the space to actually do that!

im willing to sacrifice the magnificent gloss screen of the NEC for the extra versatility this Samsung model provides

This is the monitor I just bought a couple days ago. It kicks serious butt 🙂

I was afraid of giving up my CRT. But after getting this I'm very impressed. Definitely worth the money. I got it at frys.

If you want at least 1920x1200 (or 1920x1080, but PC monitors tend to stick to the 16:10 format), its a failure.

1680 x 1050 is perfect for this monitor and size. I wouldn't want it any higher or lower of a res. They made a good choice with this res.

If I was going to only use it for HD movies and thats all then I might want that res. But then I'd just go buy a HD TV for that. For games, photoshop, apps, web surfing ect this resolution is great. And movies do look great too though.

For games this resolution is fine. Try keeping you vc up to date enough to drive the 1920x1200 panels in newer games. $$$$$$$$$$$

Evga 7800 GTX KO (490/1300)

You are correct. You aren't playing any newer games at 1920x1200 with AA/AF with that KO... A 24" LCD is a serious commitment in terms of video cards if you want to play with eye candy. Personally, I'd rather play 1680x1050 with some AA/AF.

although that samsung ain't half bad.

Yeah, i'd agree.

The Samsung seems okay, but i actually take the LG L203WT over that Samung unless you need portrait mode & height adjust (or the component or s-video ports).

IMO just the glossy coating of the 20WMGX2 puts it on a completely different level than other LCDs. This Samsung one looks quite good otherwise though.

The US version 20WMGX2 provides all the inputs/HDCP as well as PIP like the Samsung.

i wish i lived in the US 🙁

our version of that monitor has DVI and VGA... thats it. probably has PIP still, but with only two inputs to chose from i wont be using it at all. as nice as the NEC is ,the euro version is just too trimmed down to make it a sensible purchase for me. though i wonder if they will eventually bring out the american version here?

im still sticking with the samsung

yeah, samsung have a glossy coating too, i jus wish theyd use it on this monitor!!! lol

yeah i think the glossy coating puts the necs monitors on another level. i dont understand why its not on more monitors, its on like every laptop now... why not desktop LCDs. i mean how much cost can it add?

Starting off with strengths and adding blehs to make your list impressive. Photoshop/apps/web surfing - all better on a larger desktop - 1680 x 1050 is far from "perfect" there. Yes, it?s good for games, if only because it isn't as demanding. But if you want to stay cheap you shouldn't get any more than a 19" LCD. There are plenty of cards for ~$200-300 that can drive UXGA just fine, those who complain aren't spending their money wisely.

Besides, the larger the resolution the more options / better chances you'll have of finding a lesser resolution you can scale down to where the interpolation still results in a pretty damn good image.
