For $1200 you could easily build what I have:

Dual TBird 1.2's
512 MB Registered DDR
Matrox G450
Usual assortment of HD, CD, NIC, etc.

Betcha mine would kick it's ass.

The quality may look good on the outside, but once you take a peek in the case you may change your mind.

But congrats they do make good consumer level computers.

I've bought a dell before. They are really nice machines. But they aren't so easy to upgrade.

I always recommend to friends to buy Dell machines, but I'll stick to putting together my own systems.

what p4 ddr chipset is Dell using? I thought they used only intel motherboards and i am positive there are no ddr intel boards available for a p4.

I am pretty sure they'd never use DDR.....not until Intel sanctions it...

Just checked the Dell website, and the 8200 is still listed as using RAMBUS, not DDR. I highly doubt dell would have DDR until the i845 DDR variant is out.

whoops yes i guess it is RAMBUS, my bad :) is there a huge speed difference between RAMBUS and DDR ?

edit ... this explains the fake ram modules

<< Do all memory connectors need to be populated at all times?
YES. In order for Transmission Line Technology to work, all connectors must be populated. The Continuity RIMM, or C-RIMM, acts as a pass-through module for the Rambus channel. All Rambus enabled systems will be sold with all connectors populated. When it is time to upgrade, a C-RIMM will be removed and will

The Dell is a great deal for a Pentium 4 computer. It's hard to make a profit to build a computer like that with the same specs if you're going Pentium 4. However, our good friends at AMD allow us to build faster systems for less money.

That's not a bad price for a Dell system. Considering the warranty, it's a pretty good deal. You can still build one cheaper (given that you build an Athlon rather than a P4), but the difference isn't as big as it used to be.

Yep. Also, black friday is coming up. Here are prices from places off the top of my head. Didn't even do research.

From newegg:
abit kr-7: 161
XP 1700+: 156
lite-on 24x10x: 93
pioneer 16x slot load: 67
turtle beach: 65
enligh 7237: 47
generic keyboard: 8
microsoft optical: 24
seagate 60gig 7200: 131

Visiontek geforce3 ti200 from bestbuy: 110 after taxes and mir

the phillips 19inch monitor from the office depot deal: about 160

printer from frys: 70?

256 pc2100 from crucial: 35

Thats only 1097. Get yourself a set of atp3's for 45 bucks and you've got a kick ass computer system. We'll put the total at 1200 for misc stuff like fans and thermal compound.

EDIT: That comp from dell is a good deal though. Good for people who don't know computers and need the tech support. For us AT'ers though, we don't need it. :)
