Haha, I was going to post about this. Adam Savage has one and he says it is awesome. The thing looks so badass.

He said they are very delicate though you have to be very careful not to ruin their servos.

Looks like the one in your video is a later model that you can control with your phone.

I prefer my robot spiders to inject acid, jump, and explode.

The nylon in servos does strip easily. That's why I'll pay a little extra for metal gears. At least for any performance stuff.

I think the single eye glowing eye seals the deal. It's like a baby Geth. :)

Their last update said they were contacting people who preordered in 2013.

Mass Production Fail.

That's pricey for a product where the first instinct anyone that it comes into contact with will be to smash it to pieces with the nearest heavy object --- myself included.

Time to scale it up then. A few 12V marine deep cell batteries, and build the sucker 6 or 7 feet tall. If you could get something that size capable of traveling across the ground at close to the speed of someone running... a bit of fake fur on it or something, 5 more glowing eyes, some fake fangs,

you could seriously have a lot of fun.

Or just make the spider suit, and let your dog wear it, then post the funny results on youtube.

Then ride it into battle against your evil HOA overlords.

I think they're all handmade. Adam Savage said that the parts of it are all 3D printed. No injection molded plastic.

From their web site it looks like they are no longer 3D printing them, but are having them produced.

Not at all.

The deranged sick sociopath will be responsible for making it able to skitter along at 5mph.
(Though, the Rhex would probably fit the bill. It can also jump.)

Wikipedia says that those "fast-moving" house centipedes only run at 0.9mph. It just seems faster because you usually encounter them in a relatively confined room, and they're seeking out terrible vengeance on the one who turned on the lights.
On a related note, camel spiders are estimated to run at up to 10mph - nearly 15 feet per second, so maybe 1-2 seconds for a 6" horror to cross your bedroom.

It'd probably be better than "Beware of Dog."
In addition to some of the dogs that'll try to bite you in half, there are the others who'll either run and hide, or else run up to cheerfully greet the newcomer.

A sign saying "Home protected by large robotic spider," attached firmly to the spider, perched atop the roof, would be a very effective deterrent.

Ground-based is nice for a drone just for the power savings, and increased payload capacity. (Like a good computer vision system with automatic target acquisition and following capability.)

That'll have to be factored into the design criteria for the larger version:
1) Determine typical maximum object weight a person can lift, and the height to which they'll lift it.
2) Build device to accommodate the resulting force.

3) Locate and neutralize the threat.
