I watched that GIF for eight straight minutes and the slinky clearly never takes off. MYTH BUSTED.

$65 pre-order on Kickstarter...I think I know what to get my Secret Santa this year

It would have to be timed just right, wouldn't it? Looks like it works, it just blow my mind. Very interesting.

Catch - missing weight

Add weight and effects gravity has on MUCH BIGGER slinkies and you will quickly find out why this wouldn't work.

Also, treadmill needs power.....

I never got a slinky to go down more than a few stairs at a time. That is some voodoo magic right there.

This sounds like first-world-problem stuff. :D

"I love playing with a Slinky, but I need to carry it back up the stairs after it reaches the bottom. If only I had some kind of machine that would save me the work."

Pardon me, but are you saying you don't want this?

I think the brilliance behind the perpetual slinky treadmill should take a stab at redesigning gizmodo's site. I'm not sure what precipitated such a graphic paralysis, but that cr@p has to go.

The top clip is good. The video makes me want to punch the screen. "We're going to show off our perpetual motion slinky by breaking the action with every slinky step to flash annoying buzz phrases."

I feel bad for the slinky, it almost seems like it wants to go somewhere but it's confined to a tiny treadmill, always moving but never going anywhere. Time to call "PETS", (People for the ethical treatment of Slinky's)...

Not just their site theme that needs a redesign. Didn't they used to be a tech blog?

I'm tempted to get one for the office. How long before my coworkers go postal?

The acceleration due to gravity is not affected by weight. At sea level it's always 9.8 m/s² or 32 ft/s². Furthermore the treadmill's speed can be varied according to that site. Much bigger slinkies wouldn't fit though as the treadmill looks just wide enough for the one they showed.

Worse yet, the entire slinky industry will probably go to a "dollars spent" vs "miles flown" model.

Really this will be a bonanza for Hasbro as every office nerd will be ordering one to amaze and annoy everyone and it comes with a Slinky.

Yes, and I don't know what they are now. Here is what they used to look like, which apparently was too organized and easy to read for them to keep.
