My wife took and passed the FS exam, I'll see if she still has her stuff around.

I took it, but failed, so I guess I need to keep mine. ;)

Something they don't tell you explicitly is that if you want to study for the English part of the exam, the questions are made up by the same company that writes up the ACT. The English subsection of the ACT is almost identical to what you will see on the English subsection of the FSE.

Of course, the English subsection is the easiest part of the exam. ;)

Is that the test you need to take if you want to work at an embassy overseas?

Exam info

Yea, for people interested in joining the Foreign Service, they gotta take the exam.
The process description can be found here.

Interesting note, to be a Foreign Service Specialist, you don't have to take the exam...

Thanx for the ACT info. I took the ACT couple years ago, and I did fine on that test, so I'm not too worried about that part of the exam. I ordered a couple books off their reccommended reading list so I'll give those a once over.

Thanx for checking with the wife, tho.

so wait, if I know japanese, and I take this test and pass, and since japanese is one of the desparately needed languages, I could be offered a job in Japan right away as a diplomat?

edit: and the name of the song is just 'Reminded' by Drowning Pool, good song though, I like all of their songs except 'bodies' pretty much.

Well, if by quick you mean in about a year, I suppose. And not really a diplomat as there are 4 sectors for employment. PLus, you would have to pass the oral examination, background check, medical exam, get placed on the approved list, and then _selected_ from said list. The immediate offer just means your name wouldn't languish on the list for too long.

Then after an initial orientation and training period in Washington (usually between three months and one year), newly hired Foreign Service Officers are assigned overseas. During their first two assignments (each of two years duration), officers hold a variety of positions in order to demonstrate their qualifications for tenure as career Foreign Service Officers. As part of this process, officers early in their careers perform at least one year of consular work overseas and are frequently assigned to at least one hardship post.

[ha yea Bodies sux (never uderstood why they used that as their first 'real' single) - I just put that one on there cuz I was listening to the chorus and I needed something in my profile until I think of something better 8)
