i'm considering a career/job in the U.S. Foreign Service. assuming i can get the job, i'm sure it will be rewarding (and risky). but my concern is life ater the service... especially if i end up not liking it or if i get married and want to settle down.

what kinds of jobs can someone with experience in the foreign service get? if you are an FSO or know anyone who works as a foreign service officer, i'd appreciate some input. the answer to the question might depend on what career track i want to specialize in but i'll put the question out and see what answers i get. thanks guys!

From what I gather it is highly competitive with with multiple stages to pass through to make it as an FSO. On top of that there are many medical/personal background disqualifications.

The first step is applying and taking the FSO test for free. I wouldn't really sweat the details, like what your life will be like 15 years from now, until you're at least at the stage of being interviewed.
