Ford's Explorer Sport Trac Concept Coming to Detroit **Updated 12/21**

Ford Explorer Sport Trac
Ford's aging Explorer Sport Trac could be getting a replacement - if a new concept bowing at the Detroit auto show is any indication. The Explorer Sport Trac concept due at the January show, Ford says, will deliver "more of everything that helped the original sport utility truck launch one of the fastest growing segments in the industry." With competitors like the Honda Ridgeline coming to the party, Ford seems prepared to grow the Sport Trac into a size class larger than it occupies now: the new concept is almost 5 inches longer, 2 inches wider and 2 inches lower than today's Sport Trac, giving it a "street" look, according to a press release. Powered by a version of Ford's 4.6-liter V-8, the Sport Trac concept also gets Roll Stability Control, which Ford says it will put on more than a half-million vehicles this year. The 21-inch wheels add to the bling factor of the concept, which loses door handles in favor of a keyless remote for the doors. An independent suspension is fitted in the rear, and Ford promises more cargo options in the Sport Trac's bed. The Detroit auto show opens to the media on Jan. 9.

that's not bling. That's along the lines of the Lightning... which is discontinued AFAIK.

I really dislike most American cookie-cutter SUVs but they did well with the Sport Trac. This isn't bad actually.

way to go on lowering a wannabe-SUV, thereby further removing it from SUV category. It's little more than a AWD car with a tiny little bed.

I bet it'll beat the pants off that wannabe Honda Ridgeline

Pick one - Explorer or F-150. YUO CANNOT HAVE BOTH.
THere's the practicality.

Not really. It's worthless as a pickup truck - you could MAYBE put a TV back there.
It's worthless as an SUV - you have all the cabin space of a pregnant crew cab pickup.

They're not making the 500hp Lightning? Are you sure?

Spoken like a true Sport Trac owner. :disgust:

SVT canned the lightning to focus on the new Cobra. It'll be back as soon as they're done making the new 'Stang body hide somthing impressive (And they're probably also working on a police varient to the Ford 500 AWD sedan, I don't see the CrownVics lasting much longer with that thing on the prowl)

I've driven one of the older ones about 75 feet. I consider myself qualified.

Ack, AWD Police?!?! No more quick getaways in the rain for the WRX drivers!

The 21-inch wheels add to the bling factor of the concept, which loses door handles in favor of a keyless remote for the doors.

Which is just oh so useful when the power lock dies or the battery in your remote craps out and you can't get a replacement.

But hey, at least it looks cool!

Booooo!

I was just about to post the same thing. I mean, seriously, what sense does it make to have a car without door handles???

Meh, that's what Roadside assistance is for. It's worth a couple hundred dollars in the rare event of the breakdown to have something so cool.

You ever had freezing rain/winter slop freeze your door shut? No handles = nothing to grab on to tug it open.

That'll go over REAL well in states that actually get winter weather.

Door handles will be on the production model - door handle delete = option.

Lack of door handles is a big thing in show cars and concepts. Makes them look more futuristic.
