DETROIT -- Ford Motor Co. is recalling 363,440 Escape compact sport utility vehicles from model years 2001-2003 because the engine may stall at certain speeds.

Ford said some Escapes with a 3-liter, V-6 engine may experience an intermittent stall when decelerating at speeds below 40 mph.

Of the total amount, about 322,000 of the vehicles are in the United States. The remainder are elsewhere in North America and overseas.

In most cases, the automaker said, the driver is able to restart immediately after the stall.

Ford said its automotive safety office has identified eight minor accidents that may have occurred because of the engine condition, three of which involved minor injuries.

Customers will be notified of the safety recall by mail, or they can call their dealer or Ford?s toll-free hot line (800-392-3673) for more information.

I don't see why not. They're kissing cousins.
They are not included because Mazda calibrates their PCM differently than Ford.

BTW, I knew about this Friday, I couldn't say anything until it was in mainstream media.

you know it's bad when ford manages to screw up the same car that works fine as a mazda. ;)

BTW, anyone know if the escape was designed by ford or by mazda? i was wondering about that the other day. what about the ranger? probe?

I think the Escape and the Tribute are based on the Mazda 626?

the escape is a unibody FWD station wagon. definitly not a ranger derivative. you're thinking explorer and navajo.

What's the faulty part... The PCM? And what's the fix... Flashing it?

The calibration for the PCM, and yes re-flashing it will solve the potential problem.

Are you an auto technician?

When I was (for Chrysler), we had a couple of recalls for flashing the PCM... Good money (even under warranty), if you can line up a few in a row. :)

Oh c'mon, lighten up. Flashing a PCM is a very minor issue. There isn't a manufacturer out there that DOESN'T have a TSB for flashing the PCM.

Surprise. Isn't Ford releasing their Escape Hybrid relatively soon? Given how much that happens to their regular vehicles, I don't wanna see what kinda recalls the hybrids will have!

Mazda's version of the Ford Escape will add 106,000 vehicles to the number recalled earlier this week by the world's second-largest automaker. In the Mazda action, the vehicle in question is the Tribute, the Mazda-badged version of the popular Ford compact ute. The recall involves the vehicles' potential for stalling as it decelerates from about 40 mph; the NHTSA has collected complaints from owners but no fatalities have been linked to the problem. Some 2001-2003 Tributes are affected by the recall; all are equipped with 3.0-liter V-6 engines.
